Project: Residential building Höhenweg
Brief info: Residential building with five large apartments on four floors
Location: Lucerne, Switzerland
Client: Eisenbahnerbaugenossenschaft Luzern
Realisation: Competition 2003 1.Prize / Completion 2003 – 2005

The competition brief asked for a replacement of an existing building with two apartments into a building with five large high quality apartments on four floors.
The project consists of the idea to be seen as a part of the overall development. It interacts with its mass and orientation on the existing context.
The building is constructed in reinforced concrete. It consists of an outside structural system with the balconies and an inner structural system with walls, which correspond together.
In the freely placed large openings, in the monolithic volume, is a delicate vertical grid of the window partition added.
The circulation areas and the sanitary rooms are located in the centre of the building to maximize the daylight for the main living areas.
The apartments are interdigitated within this rigorous structure. The differentiation within the interleaving in the section combines two floors for each apartment, which is experienced in the circulation area only. The limitation of identical room heights creates familiar qualities in all the rooms and increases with that, the unfamiliar quality of living in a complex organised system which opens fabulous views into all direction from each apartment. All the apartments benefit from the whole dimension of the building and are orientated to all four directions.
